Matric Study Supplies: Essential Tools for Final Year Success

Matric is the most important academic year in a South African learner's school career. The National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams determine university admission, bursary eligibility, and career opportunities. Having the right study supplies eliminates friction and helps your child focus on what matters: learning the content.

Essential Study Stationery

  • Past exam papers: The single most valuable study resource. Available free from the DBE website or as printed compilations from bookshops. Budget R100-R300 for printed compilations per subject.
  • Highlighters: A set of 4-6 colours for colour-coding notes by topic, importance, or subject.
  • Sticky notes (Post-its): For flagging key textbook pages and creating quick-reference summaries.
  • A4 exam pads: Buy in bulk. Matrics go through 10-20 exam pads doing past papers.
  • Ring binder or lever arch files: One per subject for organising notes, past papers, and memos.
  • Index cards: For flashcard-based memorisation (particularly effective for languages, life sciences, and history).
  • Whiteboard + markers: A small personal whiteboard (R100-R200) is excellent for working through maths problems and mind maps.

Technology for Matric

  • Scientific calculator: Ensure it is the CAPS-approved model (Casio fx-82ZA PLUS II). Have a backup or fresh batteries.
  • Timer/stopwatch: Practise completing papers within time limits. A simple kitchen timer works.
  • Noise-cancelling earphones: For studying in noisy home environments. Even basic in-ear buds help.
  • Study apps: Siyavula (free maths and science), Quizlet (flashcards), and Past Paper SA are all useful.

Setting Up the Study Space

  • Dedicated desk or table with good lighting
  • Comfortable chair at the correct height
  • Wall space for a study timetable and subject summaries
  • Water bottle and healthy snacks within reach
  • Phone charger stationed away from the desk (reduce distractions)
  • Desk lamp with warm white light for evening study sessions

The Exam Bag Checklist

For the actual NSC exams, your child must bring:

  • Valid ID document or learner card
  • At least 3 black ballpoint pens
  • 2 HB pencils and an eraser
  • Scientific calculator (with fresh batteries, in a clear bag)
  • 30cm ruler, protractor, and compass
  • Correction tape (not fluid - fluid is banned in many exam centres)
  • Water bottle (clear, label removed)
  • Watch (no smart watches - analogue or basic digital only)

Stock up at stationery suppliers near you well before exam season.
